Dear Mr.
·
Batterbes,
The case of Mr. James Jefferson, whose letter I
return, has been repeatedly considered by Mr. Hodge personally
and this Department. He was invalided after a relatively
short period of service for prolapse of the rectum, an
infantile trouble which recurred while he was under training,
and which our medical authorities could find no sufficient
reason for attributing to service. Jefferson appealed to
the Officers Appeal Board, who decided, with considerable
hesitation, to give the benefit of the doubt in his favour.
He was then granted temporary retired pay at the highest
rate. On the question of its renewal, the medical board
have assessed his disablement at a lower degree; Jefferson
has appealed against this, and further enquiry is being made.
While M. Hodge cannot undertake to follow every
point in his lengthy epistle, he would like me to mention
the following points. Jefferson married after resigning
his commission and when he was, on his own showing, quite
disabled and unable to earn anything; his plea on behalf of
and finds that his case has received all possible:
consideration there. Express regret that it is pat
is not able
Mr. Long to afford him any further assistance.

And send copy of our letter to Mr. Hield,
this
thanking him for full report on the case.
